Why did we (Japanese) such a beefeater? Prior to WWII we did not have that habit. Is it because meat is universary good taste?

We know the cows has been fed with meat to get bigger faster. Cows eating meat sounds funny and so do we who used to eat veggies and perhaps some fishes according to Lyall Watson's Neophilia.
